Detailed Meaning
Introduction
In this verse, Arjuna responds with deep conviction and devotion, addressing Krishna as the Supreme Brahman, the Supreme Abode and the ultimate purifier. His words show that the teaching has awakened true recognition in his heart.
Essence
Arjuna's Declaration of Faith
Until now, Arjuna has been mostly a questioner. Here, for the first time in this chapter, he speaks, and what he says is a heartfelt declaration. The Lord's grace has begun to shine in his mind.
Paraṁ brahma (the Supreme Brahman): Arjuna recognises Krishna as the ultimate, all-pervading Reality, beyond all names and forms.
Paraṁ dhāma (the Supreme Abode): Krishna is the final resting place of all beings, the goal to which all souls return, and also the ground upon which the universe stands.
Pavitraṁ paramam (the supreme purifier): Just as fire purifies metals, remembrance of the Lord purifies the mind and removes impurities from the heart.
Puruṣaṁ śāśvatam (the eternal Person): The Supreme is not an abstract force but a divine Person, eternal and unchanging.
Divyam ādi-devam (divine, the original God): He is radiant and transcendent, the first among all gods and the source of every divinity.
Ajaṁ vibhum (unborn and all-pervading): These words echo verse 3. Arjuna has heard and understood, and he now repeats the truth in his own words, a sign of real learning.
Message for Everyday Life (From Hearing to Realising)
Reflect and express: True understanding often becomes clear when we articulate it in our own words. After learning something meaningful, try writing or explaining it to someone else.
Let gratitude find words: When life gives us clarity or support, expressing thanks, whether in prayer or to the people who helped us, deepens that clarity.
