Detailed Meaning
Introduction
Lord Krishna explains the meaning of Sat: it is used to express reality and goodness, and it is also applied to any praiseworthy action.
Essence
Sat: Truth and Goodness
The word sat literally means 'that which is' and so carries the sense of truth, existence, and auspiciousness.
Sad-bhāve (in the sense of reality or existence): Sat points to what truly exists, the unchanging reality underlying all things. Everything that is truly real shares in this Sat.
Sādhu-bhāve (in the sense of goodness): Sat also expresses moral excellence. We call a person sādhu when they are good and virtuous.
Praśaste karmaṇi tathā sacchabdaḥ pārtha yujyate (and the word Sat is used for praiseworthy action, O Pārtha): Whenever an action is noble and auspicious, it is described with this word. An act such as helping a person in need, or the celebration of a marriage, is spoken of as 'sat'.
The verse unites metaphysics and ethics. What is ultimately real and what is ultimately good are not separate. Living in accordance with truth and goodness is therefore a way of aligning oneself with Reality.
Message for Everyday Life (Anchoring Life in Truth and Goodness)
Choose actions that are real and wholesome: Many of our efforts are spent on things that are fleeting or empty. Actions rooted in honesty and benefit to others have lasting value.
Practical approach: When making a decision, ask: Is this true? Is this good? Aligning your choices with these two questions gives life a stable direction.
